Located off the eastern coast of Taitung, Orchid Island is a small island that nurtures Taiwan's only marine indigenous culture. When visiting Orchid Island, follow Tao guides into traditional villages to learn about the traditional life and culture of the Tao people. To withstand strong northeast monsoons and summer typhoons, the Tao people ingeniously built their houses below sea level. Besides the main living quarters, there are also verandas and workshops imbued with Tao cultural significance. Exploring Orchid Island allows visitors to embark on a profound journey guided by interpreters who grew up in these underground houses, eager to explain the island's history and Tao culture.
